Martin Figura is a portrait and social documentary photographer. His main influences are the German photographer August Sander and the American Joel Sternfeld. He has now given up smoking and is practicing looking cool without a cigarette. Much of his most progressive and arresting work is in the Arts Sector; photographing other artists on commissions from museums and galleries. He is also regularly commissioned to make work in his own right by museums and galleries. This is often in highly sensitive subject areas. Working with vulnerable young people on a wide range of projects is also an important element of his practice. His work has been widely published and exhibited in England and Europe, including The Photographers Gallery and National Portrait Gallery. He has work in several collections including the Imperial War Museum and Side Gallery. He has recently completed a collaborative project with the artist Sue Ridge for the Breast Imaging Department at the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital. He is now working on a collaborative project with the poet Helen Ivory for The New Writing Partnership and on a major project in Dunstable. He undertakes editorial and corporate commissions for clients as diverse as Channel 4, Marks and Spencer, Nursing Times Magazine and the Strategic Rail Authority. His book This Mans Army was published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in 1998. Martin Figura is also a poet.
